Drift southwards through time on a warm breeze pregnant with the scents of summer to Moorish Cordoba. TCF cordially invites its friends and supporters to join in an Arabian night at:

Allow yourself to be refreshed by our delicious mocktails on arrival and catch up with friends in the stunning Arab Hall of Leighton House. From there Realm of Music, with whom The Citizens Foundation have joined hands for the first time for this event, will transport you to the tranquil courtyards of Cordoba upon strains of Moorish baroque played on period instruments.

After an update for all friends and supporters by TCF on its ground-breaking activities in Pakistan, you will have to opportunity to mingle with the artists and to purchase some unique and beautiful hand-made items imported from Pakistan and available exclusively to our guests.

Cast aside the winter blues and indulge your senses with the sights, sounds and flavours of Moorish Spain.

The Citizens Foundation

Formed in 1995 by a group of individuals concerned at the dismal state of Pakistan's vastly under-funded and neglected education sector, TCF now has 156 fully operational primary and secondary schooling units, bringing a positive change to over 20,000 children and employing close to 1,450 teachers and support staff.

The Friends of the Citizens Foundation Ltd (UK registered charity 1087864) was formed in August 2001 as a voluntary organization with the sole aim of coordinating TCF's activities in the UK.

b Naples, 1585; d Naples, 1656
An Italian lutenist who spent his early years in Spain. He was a music teacher at the convent of S Brigida, Genoa, from 1632 but in June 1636 he was denounced by the mother superior for distracting the nuns with his music! He was later appointed maestro di cappella at Naples (which was then under Spanish dominion) and held the post until his death of the plague. La Suave Melodia (Naples, 1660)

Diego Pisador
b Salamanca, 1509 d after 1557
A Spanish vihuelist and composer. This piece comes from Pisador's anthology Libro de música de vihuela (Salamanca, 1552). Diego was evidently passionate about music, and wrote many spanish songs despite his Father's attempts to stop him. When it came to deciding on whether to bend to his Father's will, or continue with music, the music won over, but Diego lost out on a substantial inheritance! Romance - 'La mañana de San Juan'

Diego Ortiz
b Toledo, c1510; d Naples, c1570
A very influential Spanish composer who spent a lot of time in Naples, at a time when it was under Spanish rule. This piece comes from his most famous publication in which he has composed his own wonderfully ornamented versions of popular songs of the period. Recercada Segunda sopra 'Il Passemezzo'

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina
b probably at Palestrina, 1526; d Rome, 1594
One of the towering figures of music in the 16th century. His music came to represent the perfection of the musical style of that period. His style is very clean and balanced - offering ideal material for those composers who wanted to use it as a base for ornamented and decorated versions. Some of his songs (such as this one) were popluar for decades. 'Vestiva i Colli' ('The hills and Meadows...')

Bartolomé de Selma y Salaverde
b Cuenca, c1595; fl 1613–38
Spanish Augustinian friar, composer and virtuoso bassoonist. He was one of the many composers who wrote specially ornamented versions of Palestrina's beautiful songs. Divisions on 'Vestiva i colli'

Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger
b Venice, c1580; d Rome, Jan 1651
Kapsberger was an Italian composer, lutenist, theorbist and guitarist of German descent and enjoyed and very high reputation and social standing. The musical evenings he organized in his house were described as among the wonders of Rome. Passacaglia for solo lute 5
Biagio Marini
b Brescia, 5 Feb 1594; d Venice, 1663
Violinist, music director, and composer in Venice. He was married 3 times, had 5 children, and lived to the ripe old age of 76! Romanesca (1618)

7.30pm: You will be guided upstairs to take your seats in the recital hall for the music. (45 mins)
This will be followd by a TCF presentation, after which delicious mocktails and other drinks will be served again, with desserts. You will also have the opportunity to fully explore this extraordinary venue and purchase beautiful handcrafts imported directly from Pakistan.
