The Italian style spreads like fire across Europe...
As the thirst for the new Italian style - expressive, singing melodies, and fast, virtuosic movements -
grew, so did the numbers of Italian musicians employed in European courts. One of the most popular new
types of chamber music was the trio sonata - two melody instruments (e.g violins) weaving beautiful textures
and catchy tunes above the bass line (often played by harpsichord and cello or theorbo).
In tonight's programme you will hear a selection of some of the most popular trio sonatas of the baroque
period. Well-known composers such as the infamous Arcangelo Corelli of Rome and Antonio Vivaldi of Venice feature
alongside their compatriots living and working all over Europe. Geminiani, for example, was a prominent
Italian violinist who came to London in the early 1700's to try his luck with the fickle English public.
His beautiful, if somewhat eccentric works are amongst the gems you will enjoy tonight.
