What is the Baroque?Nowadays a generic term to describe all works written in the hundred-year period from 1650-1750. Musical language and style, it must be underlined, never stand still. They evolve from one decade to the next, so there is a clear difference to be heard beteen the sounds of Bach and those of Purcell, indeed between Bach and his two highly reputed contemporaries Telemann and Vivaldi. Nevertheless there is a Baroque sound, so to speak, which can be distinguished from the preceding Renaissance and the succeeding Classical sounds.
