Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525, Palestrina - 1594, Rome)
Palestrina was one of the towering figures in the music of the
late 16th century, and his music for church was so popular and enduring that he earned the reputation
of the ideal Catholic composer. His music is constructed on perfectly balanced, beautiful
symmetry, and later generations considered it a model of perfect achievement.
The new 'baroque' style overturned these values
Listen to the pure flowing
lines and the way in which the voices imitate each other with a natural ease. This style became known as
the stile antico. when, around
1600, composers started experimenting with a more soloistic and
dramatic style which became known as the stile moderno. In the new style, composers strove to
communicate the meaning of the text much more than before.
