About Leighton House

Designed as a showcase for artistic and aesthetic taste

Leighton House is the former home of Frederic, Lord Leighton, (1830-1896) President of the Royal Academy and a leading exponent of 19th Century claassical art. It was designed as a showcase for artistic and aesthetic taste and incorporates dramatic ebonised woodwork, gilded decoration and classical black and white mosaic floors. Together with Persian carpets, rich fabrics and a stunning array of Willian De Morgan tiles, the interiors suggest an atmosphere of unparalleled sumtuousness and opulence

An opulent fantasy

The centrepiece of the house is the famous Arab Hall, created in 1877 to accommodate Leighton's remarkable collection of Islamic tiles. The dazzling display of 16th and 17th century Damascus tiles, enhanced by the calming murmur of the fountain, was compared by Leighton's friends to a scene from Arabian Nights and today evokes the beauty and exoticism of the Middle East.

This opulent fantasy extends throughout the other richly-decorated period rooms which contain a fine selection of paintings by Leighton and his contemporaries, including Millias and Burne-Jones.
