Rothamsted Manor is now part of the Rothamsted Experimental Station,
and is based around a house that was built in the 16th century,
although beams from the main part of the house may have been used previously
at the site as early as the 13th century. The facade seen here is an 18th
century addition of the Wittewronges, a Dutch family who moved from Ghent
to escape religious persecution in the 17th century. Descendants of the
Wittewronges remained in the house until 1763 when it passed by female
descent into the Bennet family, and then to the Bennet-Lawes. Perhaps
the most famous inhabitant of the house was John Bennet Lawes (1814-1900)
founder of Rothamsted Agricultural Research Station which today the Manor
is an integral part of. |
